HER: The paper we’re diving into today is called Hosea’s Prophecy, Scattered Tribes, and the Sand of the Sea: Questions Concerning the Hiding and Restoration of the Northern House of Israel by W. Kent Smith.

HIM: Yeah, that title is a mouthful, isn’t it? But it definitely hints at all the twists and turns we’re in for. Smith is really digging into one of The Bible’s big mysteries. What exactly happened to the ten northern tribes of Israel after they got conquered by the Assyrians? Those folks that people sometimes call the Lost Tribes of Israel.

HER: And what I like about this paper is that it doesn’t just ask where those tribes went, it actually tackles a deeper—I’d say more uncomfortable—set of questions. Like: Did God lose track of them? Or was their disappearance actually part of some larger divine plan? Which, you know, makes you think about how we understand these ancient stories at all.

HIM: Right, and Smith lays out the stakes pretty clearly. He asks three main questions: Why did God scatter those tribes in the first place? Did God lose track of them, like humans did? And is there still some kind of hope for their return or are they just gone?

HER: And the answers he comes up with are not what I expected when I started skimming it. First off, Smith argues, drawing from Leviticus and other places, that the whole scattering thing was about more than punishment. It was about letting the land rest. Which, it always amazes me how much real estate concerns there are in The Bible. But this was about more than just the land lying fallow. It’s a spiritual metaphor for “rest” or “sabbath,” which is, I don’t know, a reminder to hit pause sometimes?

HIM: That’s actually a neat point. Like, as much as the ancient Israelites messed up, the story isn’t just “bad things happen to bad people.” It’s about cycles and, I guess, opportunities for, what’s the word? Reset? And then you get the bit about whether God lost track of them. Smith points to The Book of Amos, where God says, “I haven’t lost a single grain.” So, there’s this idea that even though history kind of forgets people, that doesn’t mean they’re forgotten in the divine sense.

HER: Oh, I love that. Honestly, I wish I could believe no one ever gets truly left behind. But then we get to Hosea, which is where things get really wild. God has Hosea marry a prostitute as this very shocking public sign of Israel’s betrayal. And then has him name his children for phases of judgment. Apparently, ancient prophets had to put on quite a show.

HIM: Right? Hosea—king of biblical performance art. But seriously, it’s all for this big payoff. After the doom and gloom, you get that weird twist: “Your numbers will be like the sand of the sea.” Smith takes this as a prophecy that eventually the Lost Tribes wouldn’t stay lost. Instead, they’d be rediscovered, restored, or reconnected somehow.

HER: That’s where Smith brings in archeology. And I have to admit, I wasn’t expecting Nineveh and cuneiform to show up. But apparently, 19th-century finds like the Behistun Inscription and the Assyrian Tablets helped link the Lost Tribes to the Scythians, and then to the Celts. Which, okay, is controversial, but it’s a wild thought experiment.

HIM: Yeah. I mean, Smith is careful to note that a lot of this isn’t absolute fact. It’s interpretation. It’s digging around in the messiness of history and old texts and trying to see patterns. Academic research isn’t just: “Here are the answers.” It’s: “Let’s turn the puzzle pieces this way.”

HER: Totally. And for us regular folks reading this stuff, the real takeaway might be that nothing—no people, no story—is irretrievably lost. At least not in the imagination. Or maybe that faith and memory are both a bit slippery. Kind of like the sand of the sea, come to think of it.

HIM: That’s a nice way to put it. Even when the details blur, the hope for restoration or another try always seems to be bubbling under the surface.

HER: And that’s a wrap, I think. Unless: Did you ever wonder if your ancestry might trace back to some lost tribe? I mean, we all do that “spit in a tube thing” these days.
