Welcome to In Depth With Academia. I’m Richard Price, CEO of Academia, here as always to take you on a friendly and curious journey into academic discoveries, but never, never telling you what’s true or what to believe.

Today, we have a fascinating deep dive into a kind of historical and biblical detective story. We’re going to be unpacking a paper by W. Kent Smith called Hosea’s Prophecy, Scattered Tribes, and the Sand of the Sea: Questions Concerning the Hiding and Restoration of the Northern House of Israel. Now, if you’ve ever heard about the Lost Tribes of Israel, or maybe you’ve even seen a documentary and wondered: Hey, whatever happened to those 10 northern tribes?

So, what’s the big question that W. Kent Smith tackles? It centers on why the ancient northern kingdom of Israel—known as the House of Israel—disappeared from history after being conquered by the Assyrians. Why were they scattered? What was the divine purpose? And is it really correct to call them lost?

And believe it or not, this isn’t just a dusty, abstract debate for old historians. It’s a puzzle that still sparks a lot of interest, and honestly, some very strong opinions. Smith’s paper walks us through this complex history by starting way, way back—like ancient times—right after King Solomon.

After Solomon’s heart, according to the biblical account, drifted from God, the united kingdom of Israel split in two: the north with its 10 tribes and Judah to the south. That division set the stage for the eventual fall and exile of both kingdoms. But—and here’s the part that grabs you—the northern tribes were scattered by the Assyrians and, well, kind of drop out of the direct biblical narrative. Why would that happen? What’s the meaning behind this scattering? And are these tribes truly lost forever? Or is there hope for restoration?

Smith digs into old scriptures to show that God’s stated reason, at least biblically, was connected to disobedience, kind of this deal where the land itself would rest while the people were in exile. It’s this idea found in Leviticus, suggesting that the scattering was about more than just punishment. It was also about resetting the land, and in some sense, resetting the people’s relationship with faith.

But if the biblical text—again, just relating what Smith found—if the text says they vanished from the story, does that mean God lost track of them, too? Well, Smith brings in passages from Amos and Hosea where God says, basically, “I haven’t lost track of a single grain.” The imagery is that even when humanity forgets or writes off a people, maybe the Divine doesn’t. It’s an intriguing concept.

And then Hosea’s vivid prophecy about the sand of the sea—meaning the descendants would be countless and one day restored—forms the anchor for Smith’s argument. Here’s where it goes in a kind of unexpected direction. Smith delves into archeology, so not just relying on biblical texts and tradition, but talking about discoveries in the 1800s, things like the Behistun Inscription and the excavation of Nineveh.

Some scholars, he says, began identifying the lost Israelites with groups in Europe—Scythians, Celts, and so on—due to historical linguistic and a bit of creative detective work. It’s this idea that these tribes weren’t lost so much as hidden, and they emerged under new identities.

Is that theory universally accepted? No way. And, again, this podcast doesn’t endorse it. I’m just walking you through what’s presented. The arguments rest on parallels between biblical prophecy, archeology, and, honestly, a fair amount of interpretation.

Let’s pause, though. Isn’t it funny how people always want to draw a straight line from ancient mystery to modern identity? There’s, like, this human desire to find ourselves in the past, or to—I don’t know—lay claim to some big story that runs through time. It reminds me a bit of my uncle’s old obsession with tracing our family tree, convinced we were descended from 17th-century pirates. Or maybe it was Dutch milkmaids. The records were never quite clear. Anyway, back to the paper.

For you, the listener, what does this all mean? Smith’s exploration asks us to consider how histories—biblical or not—can disappear, change shape, and get reinterpreted across generations. In a way, it also highlights how academic research is a living conversation, not a proclamation of immutable fact. Maybe the best takeaway is to notice how questions of identity, belonging, and restoration keep recurring, not just in ancient history, but everywhere humans form stories about themselves.
