Fish Tales (From the Belly of the Whale): Fifty of the Greatest Misconceptions Ever Blamed on The Bible

“Smith takes aim at the idea that The Bible is this super straightforward, easily understood book, when actually, its language and stories have led to centuries of some of the biggest myths people think are straight from Scripture. The core issue he digs into is that the ambiguity and paradox in The Bible weren’t accidental. Smith argues that this was on purpose. The result? Smith shows us how so many cultural, religious, or even political ideas get propped up by what people say is “biblical.” But when you look closer, either it’s not there, or it’s been twisted out of its original context… Smith’s really big on reading “in context.” If you cherry-pick a single verse, or only rely on what tradition hands down, you almost guarantee you’ll get something skewed, maybe even harmful… Smith’s point is that, as readers, we carry a responsibility. We can’t just passively accept what sounds scriptural. We have to do the work… So stay curious, double-check, and the next time someone quotes The Bible, dig around, check the broader story, and see what you find. You might be surprised, maybe even a little embarrassed, but then again, a little humility never hurts, especially when it comes to these ancient stories…”

HER: The paper we’re diving into today is Fish Tales (From the Belly of the Whale): Fifty of the Greatest Misconceptions Ever Blamed on the Bible, Reel One, The Hook #50-34 by W. Kent Smith.

HIM: Honestly, what a title, right? Smith takes aim at the idea that The Bible is this super straightforward, easily understood book, when actually, its language and stories have led to centuries of, well, some of the biggest myths people think are straight from Scripture.

HER: Exactly. The core issue he digs into is that the ambiguity and paradox in The Bible weren’t accidental. Smith argues that this was on purpose. The result? The Bible can, and has, inspired both the best and the worst in humanity. And I mean, that’s massive, because it pushes us to ask, when we think we know what The Bible says, do we actually?

HIM: And what he’s doing, really, is showing how so many cultural, religious, or even political ideas get propped up by what people say is “biblical.” But when you look closer, either it’s not there, or it’s been twisted out of its original context.

HER: Right, like his three-step misconception machine. I love that. It’s one, grab a legit-sounding biblical idea, two, strip it from its context, and three, repeat it until it becomes ingrained, even if it totally misses the original message. So “Money is the root of all evil” is a classic, but The Bible actually says, “The love of money.” See the difference?

HIM: Totally. And another example is: You should not kill, which is traditionally interpreted as any kind of killing, but the Hebrew actually means “murder,” not the same thing. That tiny shift in language has led, over centuries, to huge differences in how people judge wars, self-defense, you name it.

HER: Smith does this with story after story. He goes into the Tower of Babel. Most people think The Bible says humanity spoke one language until God scrambled it, and that’s that. But, surprise! If you read the chapter before, Genesis says there were already multiple languages before Babel. It’s honestly kind of embarrassing for all those Sunday school lessons.

HIM: Ha! It is. And it gets at something bigger. Smith’s really big on reading “in context.” So, if you cherry-pick a single verse, or only rely on what tradition hands down, you almost guarantee you’ll get something skewed, maybe even harmful. He traces this through things like the supposed perpetual curse on Eve, or how even the birth date of Jesus got mapped onto old pagan traditions.

HER: You know, while I was reading, I started thinking about how easy it is for these ideas to take hold. Like, people aren’t trying to mislead each other most of the time. My grandma used to tell me, “Cleanliness is next to godliness was biblical.” She was convinced. But that’s nowhere in there. Maybe she thought it was in Proverbs or something.

HIM: Mine too. And it’s not just harmless sayings. It shapes real beliefs and, sometimes, really harmful actions. Smith’s point is that, as readers, we carry a responsibility. We can’t just passively accept what sounds scriptural. We have to do the work.

HER: Yeah, and I like that the paper doesn’t say, “Hey, here’s the final truth, now you know for sure.” It’s more: Here’s a method, be skeptical, double-check, let the text breathe in its full context. It actually makes the whole thing feel less rigid and, somehow, more alive.

HIM: Absolutely, because academic research, like this paper, gives us tools, not answers with a capital “T.” And honestly, it’s an invitation to curiosity. Next time someone quotes The Bible, maybe dig around, check the broader story, and see what you find. You might be surprised, maybe even a little embarrassed, but I think that’s the point.

HER: Yeah, a little humility never hurts, especially when it comes to ancient stories. All right, I think that’s a wrap for today, but I kind of want to go apologize to my grandma’s ghost for doubting her, even if she was wrong.

HIM: Same here. Maybe I’ll even look up a verse or two, just to be sure.
