Fools, Heretics, and The Zodiac—The Academia.edu Essay Chat

Why is it that the first time Scripture refers to a “sign,” it’s used in relation to the stars God placed in the Heavens?

Fools, Heretics, and The Zodiac: Questions Concerning the Biblical Mandate to Not Kill

“Is there a legitimate, maybe even biblical, purpose behind the Constellations? Or, as so many believe, are the stars just Satan’s playground, meant to tempt us away from the pure stuff?… Smith connects biblical dots by pulling verses from Amos, Psalms, Job, and Genesis, all pointing out that not only did God create these stars and constellations, He made them for “signs,” with the Hebrew word for “sign” meaning things like “omens,” “markers,” or “evidence”… Then Smith ties it back to Psalm 19: “The Heavens declare the glory of God,” arguing that if Jesus is that glory, then the skies are preaching the story of Christ… It’s like the entire structure of the Universe is meant to back up the biblical story, just in picture form instead of words…”

HER: The paper we’re diving into today is Fools, Heretics, and The Zodiac: Questions Concerning the Biblical Purpose of the Constellations by W. Kent Smith. Quite a title—kind of provocative, right?

HIM: Yeah, I mean, just hearing The Zodiac and Bible together, you basically expect fireworks, or maybe pitchforks. But Smith comes out swinging, questioning why so many Christians automatically brand anyone who talks about The Zodiac in a positive light as, well, either a fool or a heretic.

HER: Exactly. And that’s the core issue the paper wrestles with. Is there a legitimate, maybe even biblical, purpose behind the Constellations? Or, as so many believe, are the stars just Satan’s playground, meant to tempt us away from, you know, the pure stuff?

HIM: Which obviously matters, because it kind of shapes how people see, like, the entire Universe. If you think God made the stars as “signs,” that’s a completely different outlook than seeing them as forbidden territory. And it affects your awe when you look up at the night sky. Do you wonder? Or do you worry?

HER: Smith starts by digging into this big disconnect. How, on one hand, Scripture says God appointed and named the stars, and even specific constellations like Orion and the Pleiades, while, on the other hand, there’s this automatic shutdown against finding any meaning in them. It’s a clash. Caution versus curiosity.

HIM: He does a bit of a historical sweep, too. Like, he talks about Gnosticism dismissing the stars as pointless at best, and then you get medieval Christians saying, well, God made them, but the devil hijacked the message. And then there’s just the general modern take, where if you even hint that the stars are saying something intentional, you’re gently shuffled out of polite company.

HER: Or not so gently. But Smith doesn’t stop at the suspicion. He starts connecting biblical dots. He pulls verses from Amos, Psalms, Job, and Genesis, all pointing out that not only did God create these stars and constellations, He made them for “signs.” And, this was interesting, the Hebrew word for “sign” actually means things like “omens,” “markers,” or “evidence.” So, not just pretty decorations, but “signals.” That’s kind of wild.

HIM: What got me was when Smith ties it back to Psalm 19: “The Heavens declare the glory of God.” He argues that if Jesus is that glory, then the skies are kind of preaching the story of Christ. Like, visually. And then he goes down this rabbit hole of symbolism. The four tribes of Israel, the cardinal points of The Zodiac, the four living creatures in Revelation, and their parallels in the Gospels.

HER: I always get a little tangled up with all those layers. Lions and eagles and bulls, oh my. He even finds a mosaic in an ancient synagogue, mapping those four tribes to Zodiac signs. It’s almost like, um, the entire structure of the Universe is meant to back up the biblical story, just in picture form instead of words.

HIM: Yeah, and Smith’s point isn’t that we’re supposed to start reading horoscopes. More like, there’s this huge, overlooked theme in The Bible that the stars are “signposts” to something deeper, something cosmic about redemption or Jesus or whatever the glory of God really means.

HER: Although, I did get distracted by that bit about Enoch supposedly naming all the stars before the Greeks even got involved. It’s funny how these ancient stories all try to one-up each other. Imagine having that job, naming every single star. I can barely name my houseplants.

HIM: Same. But to tie it back, the real impact for any listener, I think, is that the paper is almost giving permission to ask: What if? What if science or astronomy or even mythology can stir up wonder instead of only suspicion? And what if some of those old ways of seeing are more about fear than about faith?

HER: Yeah, it’s not a manifesto. Smith leaves room for disagreement. He’s kind of poking at the boundaries, saying research isn’t doctrine. We’re meant to wrestle with these ideas, not memorize them. Or, you know, stone anyone who’s curious.

HIM: If nothing else, it’s a reminder. Sometimes the things we dismiss fastest might actually hold the most intriguing questions. So next time you look up at Orion or the Pleiades, maybe pause before rolling your eyes.

HER: Or naming new constellations after your houseplants. Hey, everyone needs a legacy. Anyway, until next time, keep looking up and questioning the obvious, right?

HIM: Absolutely.
