The Day, the Hour, and the Mystery of the End
Everywhere we turn, time dominates. Clocks chime. Watches beep. Phones chirp. Devices remind us constantly what hour it is, how many minutes remain. We are obsessed with time: time is up, time to go, time is money.
Yet long before the modern world became fixated with time, The Bible declared its supreme importance to God’s plan. “There’s a time for everything,” Ecclesiastes tells us, “a time to be born and a time to die, a time for war and a time for peace.” The prophet Isaiah spoke of the “time” of God’s favor. Daniel referenced the “set times” of the Lord, mentioning “appointed times” more than once. Jesus Himself emphasized the importance of doing things at the “right time.” Paul echoed this theme to both the Corinthians and Romans, speaking of an “appointed time” and how at the “right time” Christ died for us.
Despite this clear biblical pattern, though, a peculiar misconception has taken root: that Jesus said nobody can know the day or the hour of His Second Coming, not even Him. But if God is truly a God of set times and appointed moments, as The Bible describes in great detail, then how could His Son be ignorant of history’s most pivotal appointment?
Seeing God as a God of Set Times
To understand what we’re talking about here, when we consider when the end of the world will occur, we must first fully grasp this foundational truth about God’s character, that of His unwavering commitment to precise timing. Consider the following:
Before the Great Flood, God wasn’t vague; He gave humanity a precise number in the form of specific deadline: 120 years to repent
When God promised Abraham that his descendants would be enslaved, He was equally specific: 400 years in Egypt, then deliverance with great wealth
When Jeremiah warned Judah of Babylonian captivity, the word of the Lord was just as clear: 70 years of desolation, then restoration
Each promise was fulfilled, right on time. Each appointment was kept, right on time. This pattern culminates in what biblical scholars call the Seventy Weeks of Daniel, the most comprehensive timeline of redemption ever revealed. Daniel was told: “Seventy weeks are determined for your people and for your holy city, to finish the transgression, to make an end of sins, to make reconciliation for iniquity, to bring in everlasting righteousness, to seal up the vision and prophecy, and to anoint the Most Holy.”
The significance of this can’t be overstated. Based on this timetable of 70 weeks, or 490 years, humanity was given a precise window to expect the coming of the Messiah. Upon the completion of 69 weeks, or 483 years, Messiah would be cut off. Jesus came exactly when the prophecy foretold.
So, if God demonstrated such meticulous timing for Christ’s first appearance, would He be careless about His second appearance?
The Confusion Around “No One Knows the Day or Hour”
The source of confusion stems from Matthew 24, where Jesus says: “But of that day and hour no one knows, not the angels, or the Son, but only the Father.” Tradition has isolated this verse, repeated it endlessly, and concluded that the Second Coming must remain entirely unknowable.
But this interpretation collapses when you read the passage in full context. Just before this statement, Jesus says: “So also, when you see all these things, you know that He’s near, even at the door.” How can both be true? How can no one know the day and hour, yet He be recognized as near and at the door?
The answer lies in understanding what event Jesus was actually describing. The phrase “of that day and hour no one knows” appears immediately after “Heaven and Earth will pass away.” From this, we see that Jesus wasn’t speaking of the Second Coming itself, but of the end of this age, when Heaven and Earth are to pass away—an event that occurs after the Millennium and after a final rebellion is put down. This future event happens after an undisclosed period called “a little season,” which is why no one can know its precise timing.
The Second Coming, however, is a different matter entirely.
Signs of the End Times: What We Can Recognize
Jesus taught that while the Rapture—His private gathering of believers—will come “as a thief in the night” without warning, His public return in glory operates under a different timeline altogether. The key to recognizing the true nature of these event lies in understanding the structure of the final seven years.
Daniel revealed that after a certain point in history, a final “week” of seven years would begin. During this Great Tribulation:
The first three and a half years involve a deceptive peace treaty with the Antichrist
At the midpoint of the seven years, this covenant of peace is shattered, and intense and widespread persecution is unleashed
The Two Witnesses are then killed in Jerusalem and, after three and a half days, they rise and ascend to Heaven in full view of the world
This leads directly to the final three and a half years of the Great Tribulation, culminating in the Battle of Armageddon
Then, in the final hour, Christ returns to prevent global extinction
This timeline isn’t vague. It’s countable. When the Two Witnesses are killed and the world watches them rise three and a half days later, everyone will witness it. From that point, one can count 1,260 days until the Return of Christ. Even those who have opposed God throughout the Great Tribulation will recognize His approach.
The Two Aspects of Christ’s Coming
This is where the apparent contradiction dissolves. This is where it suddenly becomes obvious that the Second Coming of Christ isn’t a single event but actually comprises two distinct phases.
First, the Rapture: a hidden, private manifestation where the Lord gathers living and deceased believers to meet Him in the clouds. This occurs like a thief in the night—suddenly and without warning.
Second, the Return in Glory: a public, visible manifestation where every eye will see Him. This is what the entire world will witness.
Just as the First Coming had multiple phases—His birth, ministry, death, resurrection, ascension—the Second Coming also unfolds in stages. The Rapture answers the question of how Christ’s coming catches the world by surprise. His visible return, however, will be foreseeable for those alert enough to recognize the signs.
Why the Mystery Matters
Jesus deliberately crafted His words about the End of the Age to reveal truth to those willing to investigate deeply while remaining hidden from those content with surface answers. This was His stated purpose, as He privately explained to His disciples: “The knowledge of the secrets of the Kingdom of Heaven has been given to you, but not to them.”
From this, we see just how The Bible is designed to test the sincerity of every seeker. Will you accept comfortable traditions unchallenged? Or will you dig deeper, comparing Scripture with Scripture, context with context, to discover what was actually said and meant?
God’s concern with precise timing—evident from Genesis through Revelation—assures us that His final appointment will be kept with equal precision. The God who promised 120 years before the Flood, 400 years in Egypt, 70 years in Babylon, and 483 years until Messiah won’t be uncertain about the final sequence of events leading up to His Son’s return.
