The Questions You Were Afraid to Ask Out Loud
“I grew up in church hearing things repeated so often I never thought to question them. Then I read Fish Tales and realized half of what I assumed was ‘in The Bible’ wasn’t really there at all, or at least not the way I’d been told. And here’s the thing: that didn’t shake my faith. It deepened it. This book doesn’t tear Scripture apart. It lets Scripture speak for itself, peeling back centuries of tradition and misreading to uncover the hope and beauty that was always underneath. If you’ve ever sat in a pew with a nagging question you were too afraid to raise your hand for, this is the book that finally says, ‘Go ahead. Ask. The truth can handle it.’”
A Thought-Provoking Look at Biblical Misconceptions
“Fish Tales From the Belly of the Whale is a bold, thought-provoking book that challenges readers to look deeper at long-held beliefs and traditions connected to The Bible. Rather than simply accepting common interpretations, W. Kent Smith encourages readers to question, examine, and return to Scripture with fresh eyes. What I appreciated most is that the book is not afraid to tackle difficult subjects. It invites reflection and discussion, especially for readers who have ever wondered why so many contradictions, traditions, or misunderstandings have been attached to biblical teaching over time. This is the kind of book that may challenge some readers, but that is also what makes it valuable. It pushes you to think, study, and reconsider what you have been taught. Anyone interested in biblical truth, faith-based study, or questioning religious misconceptions will likely find this an engaging and meaningful read.”
Book
“Very informative, well researched. Hats off to the author. You don’t need a title or letters in front of your name to be considered an expert on topics of this nature anymore. Research and common sense and faith will lead the way.”

Fish Tales (From the Belly of the Whale): Fifty of the Greatest Misconceptions Ever Blamed on The Bible
“Smith takes aim at the idea that The Bible is a straightforward, easily understood book… But when you cherry-pick a single verse or only rely on tradition, you’ll always get something skewed, maybe even harmful… So the next time someone quotes The Bible, dig around, check the broader story, and see what you find…”

All the misconceptions in The Bible you thought you already knew
“This book shows why you cannot take Scripture out of context, it also shows how much there is to learn if you take the time to study and read the entire Bible. This definitely opened my eyes to some things that I missed, and helped reinvigorate my study time!”

Eye opening myth busters!
“Whether you are a lifetime Christian, just starting out or even don’t believe in God, give this book a chance. The author tells what’s wrong with parables that we’ve heard over and over throughout our lifetime and tells the correct version by citing The Bible. Even the introduction, which I rarely read, was interesting.”
The truth
“This was an interesting book about parts of The Bible and what we have been told and the real truth. How certain parts of The Bible have been interpreted one way but the Hebrew version clears it up and shows that there is historical facts in The Bible.”

Exposing the contradictions
“This was a great book. It really made you think about a lot of things that you read in The Bible. The Bible has a lot of contradicting stories; this booked deals with explaining the contradictions. It exposes the misconceptions, but also restores The Bible’s original message of hope and inspiration.”
We are just fisherman listening to the sea
“Being a light in the dark world, going back to the original message of scripture before it was construed throughout the decades, Fish Tales (From the Belly of the Whale) inspires knowing and living the Truth. Highly recommend, a must-read for understanding clarity from generational passed down knowledge. We want to believe in the word being spread from an honest, reliable perspective. But in reality, the message has been passed down depending on how the world is seen at the moment in time. People need an understanding they can fully grasp to manage whatever is happening in their life. This book is refreshing.”
Interesting concept and execution of deeply complex materials
“Helpful breakdown and analysis of common biblical misconceptions. Largely interesting, if a bit complicated at times, I came away realizing that a) theology is very complex and b) it’s all too easy to misinterpret stories written in The Bible. Smith does a good job breaking things down and explaining in a palatable manner.”

Don’t judge a book by your cover
“I have always been somewhat hesitant to read such works. At 60+ years old I thought myself grounded and safe in the area of my faith and beliefs. But, a comment made by a uber-atheist friend changed all that. During an online conversation he responded to an obviously trite retort of mine (something innocuous and scriptural-sounding) with these words… ‘You only believe that because it is what you have been told.’ I dismissed the comment because of the source. A few years later, I realized how right he was. I do not doubt the basis of my faith in Jesus, but I have started a journey to unwrap what I have been told. Bear with me… I do not argue the Truth of the words of Jesus. I now stop short at believing everything anyone else claims to be ‘the meaning’ of those words. In this work I love how the author takes a look at the biblical stories from a different angle. There is nothing inherently wrong with this approach. The four Gospels (Matthew, Mark, Luke, John) are very similar in this way. Think of it… Jesus spoke to Jews and Gentiles from all walks of life. Do you think the fisherman, merchant, or the Roman soldiers understood His words to mean exactly the same thing? Then, keep this in mind … when the Gospels were written, each of the authors were writing to a different audience! Yep, Matt, Mark, Luke, and John were the first scriptural spin doctors. So when W. Kent Smith offers a different perspective, he is in good company. Each chapter is a great mental conversation starter. If you are really digging deeper into your faith, read this book. Take notes. Check references. Dare to think on your own. Challenge what you read, yes, by all means … but not before you truly determine whether your disagreements are based on little more than tradition, stubbornness, or simply being trapped in a mindset created by an unjustified stronghold of what others have told you. I cannot say I agree with all his conclusions, no more than everyone would agree with all of mine, nor all of yours. I did appreciate the challenges he presents.”
Thoroughly researched and presented
“The author has done his homework! He mixes biblical material with the Apocrypha to answer some common misconceptions. Is he right? Decide for yourself!”
Biblical in submission however points out real truths and several untruths
“From the Belly of a Fish biblical story. Brings up thoughts and inquiring minds want to know… We take a lot of things for granted we believe it’s in The Bible if it sounds biblical, if someone says it is, even if it’s misquoted. This shows several instances of misconstrued truths. Very interesting and holds your interest.”
